As always, you cannot visit Peralada without going through the cloister of Sant Domènec

Fantastic experience:
It is one of the most beautiful places in the Comtal Vila de Peralada. The visit is more than recommended, a Romanesque cloister where all the capitals are different and explains the creation to us. You can't miss the visit and a piece of advice: embrace the centenary lime tree.

Peralada
Catalonia has many medieval villages, of which Peralada is a part. From the village, you can first enjoy the beautiful surrounding countryside, marked by vineyards. The old village is a maze of small streets that one walks through in a warm and calm atmosphere. Impossible to miss the castle, adorned with its two imposing round towers and crenellated at the top: originally built in the 14th century, the building bears the marks of successive restructurings at different periods. It is astonishing to note that part of the castle has been converted into a casino! The other part is private and cannot be visited, but you can always take a stroll in its gardens. Another remarkable heritage element is the Convent of the Carmelites, located opposite the castle. This beautiful Gothic ensemble houses a museum in its premises, where various objects of Catalan art are exhibited, such as ceramics or glass collections, along with the library (which contains some old editions of Don Quixote). After the collection of sculptures in the church, one concludes with the wine museum in the basements, and the visit is complete. Thanks to the office staff for their advice and the information provided. In short, a good way to spend a nice afternoon.

I was attended by Nuria and I loved it. Pure kindness in everything I asked her and it was not little!! They provide so much information about their cloister, Ramón Muntaner room, other private places like the Castle of Peralada, casino, park, wineries, storks,... And about municipalities in the area. A pleasure to find people like this in tourist offices, which although it seems like it should be the norm, are very scarce!!!!!

Inside this tourist office, after crossing a square with a well included, you will find the only remains of the ancient convent of Santo Domingo de Perelada, its cloister. Founded in the second half of the 11th century by the Augustinians, it passed to the Dominicans in 1578. With different motifs on its capitals, it is a place that conveys peace and tranquility and is well worth a visit. On the upper floor, we find some paintings, one from the Prado Museum, works by Ramón Montaner, various objects found in excavations carried out, and an audiovisual room that tells us the history of Perelada. Highly recommended. The friendliness of Uriol, both at the entrance and exit of the office, his knowledge of what is exhibited there, and his interest in making our visit enjoyable, truly deserves special mention.

Beautiful cloister located within the tourist office of Peralada with an impressive lime tree inside it, it is worth knowing a little about its history. The cloister of Santo Domingo is isolated, in the garden of what is currently the tourist office of Peralada. The construction is rather small in size, consisting of a slightly rectangular plan, with six pairs of columns on the east and west wings, and seven pairs on the north and south, resting on bases that leave only an opening to access the interior. The maximum exterior dimensions are 9.38 meters by 11.38 meters, and the interior ones are 7.80 meters by 9.90 meters. The arches are lowered, probably due to a reconstruction that the cloister suffered 'in situ'. Moreover, the iconography of the capitals does not have a logical sequence, which suggests a change of order after this reconstruction. The arcades and columns are based on a thick plinth and are arranged in pairs, seven pairs in the north and south, and six pairs in the east and west. Each column consists of the base -almost always a square die and, on top, two bull-like shapes-, the shaft without entasis, a capital, and an abacus for every two capitals.
The sculpture of the capitals is a work of varied themes. According to the reproduced iconographic elements, several types of capitals can be seen: the simplest ones, with simple geometric shapes, are inverted truncated pyramidal in shape; another group also has geometric decoration, but in this case more abundant; a third group consists of a series of cubic capitals with geometric and phytomorphic drawings, and another group is characterized by having pine cones on the volutes. The zoomorphic capitals present different types of composition: some represent rampant lions, others lambs, and a further group depicts bird mermaids. As for the historiated capitals, some correspond to biblical scenes such as the story of Adam and Eve or the representation of Paradise. It is interesting to note that among the capitals of the southern gallery, the arms of the Rocabertí can be found.
