About Casa - Museu Salvador Dalí
The figure of Salvador Dalí has always been closely related to the Costa Brava. To this day, it remains so, since those who wish to delve into the life of this artist can do so by visiting the house that was his home for more than half a century, which was located in Portlligat.
History of the house
After falling in love with the area, Salvador Dalí did not hesitate to acquire a couple of shacks. After placing his trust in Joaquim Ferrer, a very experienced bricklayer, he gradually shaped a dwelling that stood out mainly for its spectacular sea views.
Years later, both Dalí and his wife Elena Ivánovna, popularly known as Gala, decided to hire Joan Vehí, a prestigious carpenter who took charge of transforming another shack they had just purchased into a kind of library.
Gala passed away in 1982, at which point Dalí decided not to return to his own house. Seven years later, the artistic eminence born in Figueres passed away.
Today it is not a dwelling but rather a museum space shaped by two renowned architects. Currently, the Casa-Museu Salvador Dalí is historically and artistically enjoyed by more than one hundred thousand visitors each year.
What the house-museum is like
The first thing that catches the eye is the labyrinthine aspect of the facilities. A series of hallways that are not very wide lead to several spaces that have no exit, as well as some slopes that can even lead to disorientation.
Each room present in the Casa-Museu Salvador Dalí features openings that vary not only in shape but also in size. This is another demonstration of how much Portlligat enchanted the artist from Figueres, specifically its bay, which was depicted in some of his works and also in his own home.
The house also reflects how much Salvador Dalí liked kitsch trends, in addition to the surrealist style. Both designs can be seen in the three very differentiated spaces that the Casa-Museu has. In the first of them, one can even see intimately how the couple lived in this house.
On the other hand, the studio is another of the spaces that impress visitors the most, as it is possible to see how an artist who marked a before and after worked. Finally, the spaces in the exterior are another area that captures attention.
Upon entering the Casa-Museu Salvador Dalí, one enters a room presided over by an element that Edward Frank Willis James gave to Dalí and his wife. It is a bear that was used for various purposes, from keeping umbrellas safe to holding a light point. Near that bear, there is a stuffed bird, specifically an owl, which is a clear example of the couple's passion for the conservation and exhibition of fauna, a discipline known as taxidermy.
After passing through this area, one arrives at the studio. Both the easels and other elements that Salvador Dalí used to unleash his creativity and imagination are still present in this space, with all the utensils being perfectly preserved.
After visiting the studio, it is time to access a room where Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus is represented, specifically with a plaster bust. It was precisely this same artistic element that led him to shape one of his most iconic paintings: Dematerialization of Nero's nose, which was created in 1947.
After enjoying a visit to the studio, one can see a dressing table used by Dalí's wife, as well as a kind of dressing room filled with numerous cabinets. It is not clothes that are present inside these pieces of furniture, but photographs of Gala and Salvador in which they are seen alongside several world-famous celebrities.
Crossing the mentioned space leads to a room called the Oval Room. It was frequented especially by Salvador Dalí's wife, who used it to enjoy one of her main hobbies: reading. In this place, she also hosted various visitors and acquaintances in general.
If the Casa-Museu Salvador Dalí captures much attention inside, the exterior doesn't fall behind. Indeed, we are faced with an area that is also well cared for, perfectly demonstrated by the courtyard. Again, access to this space requires passing through a labyrinthine area where there is a dining room that the couple used to have something to eat and drink during the summer season.
In some outdoor spaces, there are ornamental elements of great historical and artistic value. The best possible example is that of the figure Ilisos, created by the sculptor Phidias. The reproduction that Salvador Dalí had and that is still present in the courtyard of his house remains in excellent condition, and the same can be said for the large planters whose shape recreates the appearance of a cup.
Finally, at the Casa-Museu Salvador Dalí, one can also observe the swimming pool that was built in 1967. It is undoubtedly the point of the house that arouses the greatest admiration. And it's no wonder, as it has many decorative elements that are truly beautiful and original. For instance, in the house's pool, there are a couple of swans from which water flows, as well as a sofa shaped like lips.
Rates
Visiting this museum space in Portlligat costs €18 per individual entry, while if it is reduced, the cost is €11, and it's essential to book in advance to access the Casa-Museu Salvador Dalí.

Casa - Museu Salvador Dalí: Reviews
Fantastic experience: A wonderful insight to the life of a genius
Fantastic experience: Last part of the dali triangle. Fascinating place, guide was brilliant. Ended up getting there late as sat nav kept sending me the wrong way and poor signage didn't help. Parked in the top car park and everyone were struggling to find where it was. Improve the signage and car park please. Other than that it was a good day.
Fantastic experience: A fantastic window into Dali's life and thoughts. His studio is wonderful, once you see some of his large pieces at the museum you'll understand his movable easel. Make sure to have reservations or be ready to wait and get there early.
Fantastic experience: An amazing house in an amazing location. So intriguing and inspiring to see the house of one of the most influential artists of the 20th century
Fantastic experience: Top!
Fantastic experience: Incredible place. Tricky to drive to, but parking was easy once we found it. Well laid out museum with plenty to interest all ages
Fantastic experience: Better than expected; one tends to quickly that locations like these are exploited. Had a very pleasant time.
Fantastic experience: If you like Dali paintings, you should go. Here you could find some senses where some of his art came from. Beautiful tranquil place with large outdoor park. Inside is charming but very basic. None of the luxury you would find in "rich people" houses.
Fantastic experience: Interesting. Beautifully situated.
Fantastic experience: It was soo interesting. We made the online booking. It was Quick and easy. And we did not wait there. We got in the Museum in the booked time.
Fantastic experience: One gets to experience the remarkably personal world of Dali and his beloved Gala. One also begins to understand Dali's relationship with to seascape of Cadaques/ Port Lligat.
Fantastic experience: This place is super interesting and a must see if you’re in cadaques. There is the tour of the house and also a garden that is full of interesting facts, dalis art and some pop art collection. There are also actual footage of Dali that makes the house even more interesting
Fantastic experience: What a joy to visit this little piece of paradise on earth! Learned a great deal about Salvador Dali’s life. Tour guide wonder wonderful and even gave the tour to our group in three languages!
Fantastic experience: Completely fabulous! The best museum I have seen of this kind. It is wonderful - Don't miss it?
Fantastic experience: When in Spain, visit Dali! The view in front of Dali's house is no wonder why he was such a great artist! Full of scenic view. It's a bit of walk of ups & downs from Cadaques center but worth taking one. The house is now a museum surrounded by a small cafe, a washroom and an art gallery.
Fantastic experience: Very interesting place with amazing views, there's original interior as it was left by Dali
Fantastic experience: Wonderful
Fantastic experience: Ok, I've always loved Dalí's work. But it's only after having visited his house at Port Lligat that I feel that I understand him (a bit). It's almost like reading his intimate diary. Any that of Gala, of course.
Fantastic experience: Located in Cadaques, a lovely town to visit with the bonus of seeing where Salvador dali lived! Parking down at the house was ample but one can also walk from the town centre which will take 30 minutes with a young family. We didn't enter the house just admired it from the outside. There was a ticket office located on site as well as a well prices gift shop. A lovely place to have a stroll and admire the house as well as the sea side.
Fantastic experience: Very interesting place, helps understand the man behind the myth.
Fantastic experience: Didn’t go inside… but the surroundings are really beautiful
Fantastic experience: Very good guided tour in groups of eight through the fascinating house of Dali and Gala. The guide spoke in three different languages to accommodate group. We parked our campervan at the parking area above the house and walked down. There was a height barrier at the main entrance of the area but there was a gap in the chains down the road to the right. You have to collect your tickets at least half an hour before your tour time if you book online. We were early and were offered an earlier time due to it being quiet in November.
Fantastic experience: What a wonderful and interesting place! The Dalis must have had so much fun living there. We sure had fun experiencing the house and grounds and imagining life there during it's hey day.
Fantastic experience: If you’re a Dali fan, this is a not-to-miss spot for your trip to Cadaques!
Fantastic experience: Great and well maintained place. The explanations of the people in the museum are very helpful to get a feeling of the many rooms and objects.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful and inspirational. Was lovely to hear about his life through the evolution of his house.
Fantastic experience: The tour guide for the house is on a strict 10 minutes per floor timetable. Guided tour lasts 30minutes. Then you can take as long as you want in the gardens until closing time. A very interesting house with some nice insights into the life of dali
Fantastic experience: An inspiring place. You have the feeling that Dali and Gala will come in at any moment. The guide was very kind and made the tour of the house a very pleasant experience.
Fantastic experience: It is the coast of Spain. It is Cadaqués. And it is Gala and Salvador Dalí. Seriously, you cannot possibly go wrong! Absolutely amazing - pay the utmost attention to all the details and still don't try to make sense, because this is not the purpose. Just feel the region, feel the vibes of another time, another place, another mind, and playfully enjoy!
Fantastic experience: Amazing location and amazing experience
Positive experience:
I love the house especially the garden, it's worth it, Dalí a genius. The only thing I don't understand is the subject of tickets and the arrival time, they force you to arrive half an hour before the entrance you choose, for example if you have to be at 12:30 you have to be at 12:00 because if you arrive, in my case, at 12:20 they sell your ticket, then you have to wait for the next group to happen to you in order to you keep the tickets, I don't know... something I still don't understand... and I haven't seen that happen in any museum but hey I still recommend it.

Fantastic experience: Very touching and intimate to see where the genius and his muse lived for most of their lives. Most is (said to be) untouched. Awesome details, such as the mirror in which Dali could see the sun rise from his bed, the installation to put the paintings in place, the tiny chairs that Gala collected, the J&J baby powder in one of the bathrooms... The tiny houses, gardens, terraces, swimming pool and sights are all surprisingly rustic and romantic.
Fantastic experience: Really worth the visit! Make sure to book in advance on their website and get your tickets 30 min before departure time. A very nice experience !
Fantastic experience: The amount of time for the tour was just right. The guide spoke multiple languages and was available to answer questions. The house is full of a lot of small rooms with so many interesting things in each one of them. The garden and pool area were just as fascinating as the inside. Unfortunately, due to covid, the gift shop was closed. Other than that, it was a delightful experience.
Fantastic experience: This is by far my favourite of Dali houses in the area. A great setting and lovely grounds. Its interior is pure Dali but more personal and less commercialised overall. Walking from the nearby seaside town of Cadaques makes it a great day out.
Positive experience:
We could only see the patio, if anyone wants to go that if or if you book in advance.
Translated from Spanish
Fantastic experience:
A must if you go to Cadaqués, a little expensive entrance but it is worth it
Translated from Spanish
Fantastic experience:
Book in advance! It's always crowded, and if not you can only see the gardens
Translated from Spanish
Fantastic experience: A place to return many times.
Fantastic experience: Dali's quirky home reveals many of the influences in his paintings and also has some original art pieces that I hadn't seen before. It also revealed some of the (purposeful) eccentricities of the great man. Booking is restricted to book a few days ahead or more if possible.
Fantastic experience: Dali's house is amazing. Garden is also open to visit. It is excellent to make the visit by walking from Cadaqués. There is a free parking place in Pontlligat, but it is more natural to come here by walking. Excellent sea landscape, area for relax. After my first visit I better understand Dali. So I come now and again.
Fantastic experience: Fascinating. The house is just as he left it. Loved the secret echo room!
Fantastic experience: Really great experience and provides an excellent understanding of Dali’s life and art. Located on a beautiful cove filled with fishing boats.
Fantastic experience: An amazing experience touring through this inspirational force in art. I wonder how Dali fit in with locals and if eccentricities overwhelmed the area. Would he have cared?
Fantastic experience: Very friendly and knwoledgeavle guides. Book your visit in advance as the number of places is very limited - around 8 persons per guided tour in the house. The gardens and house terraces are always available for roaming around freely.
Fantastic experience: Buy your tickets in advance and be there half an hour before your reservation. It is a walk through surrealism.
Fantastic experience: It's amazing to share the home of Dali
Fantastic experience: If you like Salvador Dali you will enjoy it. Take your time to discover the garden. The house visit is guided but very short so if you have questions do not hesitate in making all during the first part of the visit. Book one week in advance, specially during summer!
Fantastic experience: It is absolutely worth going. The group consisted of 4 nations but the guide without any problem was speaking in Spanish, French and English. The museum - house - itself is an unforgettable experience. Nice exhibition and breathtaking views from the house.
Fantastic experience: Dali's home at Llobrigat is a wonderful experience with as much out there stuff as one would expect. A number of cottages joined together, it houses an amazing array of items in each room. The setting on the bay is stunning too and the natural gardens are lovely. Totally worth making the effort to visit from Barcelona
Fantastic experience: A must go place in Spain if you like art and views.
Fantastic experience: Amazing house which gives an insight into Dali's life. Guided tour was quite good, as were videos made by Dali himself. Can get busy. We were lucky to get tickets on the door, but it is safer to book.
Fantastic experience: Wow!!! I really love this place! It’s Dali’s house. It’s really tiny so numbers are very limited. You HAVE to pre book - you will not get in if you do not pre-book. We went mid week in December and we were the only people on the tour - so it was us and the tour guide - we were VERY lucky! The house was an old fisherman cottage which Dali upgraded and gave it a Dali twist. It’s fantastic - very quirky, very Dali. The location is beautiful. Out of all the Dali ‘triangle’ museums I enjoyed this the most. It is remote and takes some effort to get too. But the effort of really worth it! Go! Please ‘like’ if you like this review or found it useful
Fantastic experience: It was very interesting knowing about his life and excentricities I can see Dali's paintings in every window of the house. Something it caught my attention, Gala was the subject of his painting, they did not however, slept together.
Fantastic experience: Amazing! Totally worth the visit. Specially if you are a fan of the artist and art in general from the period Dali was alive.
Fantastic experience: Great museum , a must see
Fantastic experience: definitely worth seeing. full of Dali's ideas. A beautiful and slightly "crazy" garden. I advise you to reserve tickets in advance. there is no shortage of visitors.
Fantastic experience: Wonderful experience seeing the garden. I did not know I have to get tickets for the house tour weeks in advance. They are timed and only allow a limited amount of people in a time. Suggest buying tickets at least a month in advance or you will have to go through a high price tour company. Separate tickets for the garden and the home. The garden alone was worth the visit!
Fantastic experience: A very interesting place to visit. Not a lot of Dali's work on display but fascinating seeing where he did a kit of his work. The other guide was excellent, and delivered all the information in Spanish, French and English as we had a mix of nationalities in our group. Definitely recommended.
Fantastic experience: Superb exhibitions and a detailed tour around Dalis House. Features 2 of his unfinished works and much more personal works not seen in the museum at Figueres. Highly recommended, but do book tickets in advance otherwise you may not get in!
Fantastic experience:
This place was brilliant,a hard walk from casques up a steep hill, can drive.
Translated from Spanish
Fantastic experience: If you love art, excentricity and Dali this is a must place to visit in your Life! This is one of my top places so far! Really really recommend it! Top top top! It is quite crowded so buy your tickets before hand through internet! It comes with a tour, the tourguide has lots of knowledge, also know lots of languages, which makes it for almost every tourist an awsome experience. As an Art Hitorian ( Bachelor in Art), the tourist guide gave so much more information I didnt know which was even more amazing for me! I can only state WOW! Price seems high ( I think it was arount 17 euros), but totally worth it. Also definitly recommend visiting the souvenir store afterwards.
Fantastic experience: I love love love Salvador Dali. His home was so fun to walk through the outdoor Garden is very nice as well and his pool is so cool. I would highly recommend getting tickets ahead of time because if you go on the day, on certain days, you cannot possibly get a ticket. Unless you're in a waiting list and we had to wait two hours. But we went and got something to eat and it was worth the wait.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful place to learn about Dali's personal life and get a feeling of his way of living. Needs advance reservations for visiting the house; the grounds are more accessible and they had tickets at box office.
Fantastic experience: Been here about 20 years ago & I know it wouldn't change. If you like art or Dali it's worth going. It's is actual house he owned with his wife Gala. When she died, he left this house & everything in it as he couldn't bear to be in the house without her.
Fantastic experience: Amazing. Great insight into him. Guides were really excellent and patient. If you like art whatever the genre and time this is an absolute must. Helps you understand direction and thought and maybe makes one less cynical. Beautiful restful place. Will be back...
Fantastic experience: A fascinating look at Dali's personal life. A weird but practical home with wonderful views from most rooms. Worth a visit, there is a bar and restaurant and a good sized car park charging 5 euros per car all within 5 mins walk.
Fantastic experience: It's rare to come across a place like this and be amazed to understand how one designed one's own house as per their own interpretation of art and comfort. Btw, the authorities should fix the path to the parking area. Every low base car had their bottom scratched cz they had to drive through a creek.
Fantastic experience: As unique and beautiful as you'd expect Dali's house to be,. Tiny matchbox sized bird cages in each room where he'd put crickets. Every room a treat, amazing views and as he left it in 1982 when Gala died. The studio still has unfinished work on the easel. Amazing.
Fantastic experience: It's a must visit after Figueres Dalí Theatre Museum. Experience where Dali and Gala lived and created for more than 50 years. Stunning place.
Fantastic experience: It was so amazing being in the house of such eccentric artist. His house definetely shows off his personality and his weirdness. The guide spoke in 4 different languages: Catalan, Spanish, French and English so everything was enjoyed and understood. Finer details were told about Dalí and his house so it was a very enjoyable experience. The area is also very nice. I went here first and then went to the museum. It was really good to do it this way as you get a sense of how he is.
Fantastic experience: A must visit for anyone who's ever heard of, or seen any of this artist's work. Beautiful setting and so Dali! He truly lived the surreal life. Sheer inspiration.
Fantastic experience: You will be delighted if you know a bit of Gala and S.Dali life
Fantastic experience: A must if you are going to Cadaques. Tour well structured and good explained. Really eorth a visit!
Fantastic experience: Great Museum to visit if you are around. Really nice and cosy town with great facilities and restaurants.
Fantastic experience: This place was a goal for a trip and taking apart a house with guide. It was private guiding only two and recommending came out before midday. The guide was amazing and all questions were answered. Great place for artist that quality what was Salvator Dali. Thanks a lot. Very recommending place to visit when you are near.
Fantastic experience: A really interesting place. Make sure to watch the video running on a loop in a building at the top of the garden. Dali was clearly a spectacularly creative man (or completely mad, depending how you look at it). Another place with wonderful views.
Fantastic experience: It was good to see how he lives and understand Dali as an artist, other than just seeing his work in a museum. Highly recommend. Also be sure to book in advance
Fantastic experience: A very nice guided tour through the house, with enjoyable access to the gardens. Understandably, none of the finished artwork was not there. It would have been interesting if more of the books had been replaced. There were only wooden replicas of the some 4000 (!) books in the artist's collection. Nevertheless, marvelous and informative!
Fantastic experience: Guided visit of Dali's house costs 12€ divided into 4 parts. You're greeted by a bear in the entrance Then you pass his library. After that there's a fantastic view & special mirror. Then we were shown his studio, bedroom, his Moorish living room, swimming pool & lots more intimate spaces. There's extensive gardens too & other memorabilia about his life & wife Gala. The guided tour is good & you can also learn alot watching the videos in the upper gardens. Spectacular place. Fascinating learning and breathing what's must have been like to be Dali.
Fantastic experience: Worth the visit. The museum is an experience itself and the jewels collection is super interesting. Deep dive in surrealism!
Fantastic experience: Such an amazing time to see the home of Dali. The tour is wonderful and the gardens are amazing. The staff is very helpful in explaining everything. It does have a lot of stairs, if that is an issue.
Fantastic experience: Great place to have an extended glimpse of Salvador Dallí's life and art. The museum is divided in 2 parts: The house and the gardens. To visit the inside, it is better to book because there are a limited number of admissions. However the garden can always be visited for a reduced price. A one of it's kind residence of this unique artist!
Fantastic experience: Loved this museum, it gave a really interesting insight into Dalí’s life. We were guided around the house in a small group by a really good and informative guide who really knew her stuff and was happy to jump between French and English exploration. We needed to book 5 days in advance and made our own way to the museum - a drive which is stunning and hairy in equal measure.
Fantastic experience: If you're around Cadaqués it's a must, Dali's house is surreal. It's like being inside one oh his paintings. If you want to enter the house you should book in advance, otherwise you can visit the exterior of the house and the gardens which are incredible also.
Fantastic experience: An absolute MUST if you are in Cadaqués! Such a beautiful house. We paid 6 EUR for the garden visit, which was super nice. Don’t miss out on the movie about Dalí in the Olive Garden. Although, we should have booked 1 week ahead to be able to see the inside of the house. Parking facilities were good, with a small fee.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful little town by the sea and Dalís home very interessing to see. Book ahead. Nice guide that speaks many languages.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful place, definitely worth a visit. I recommend to make reservation beforehand - the museum tickets were already sold out when we got there. But the gardens are amazing as well.
Fantastic experience: Love it! Is definitely a MUST! I assure you'll enjoy it! Besides Portlligat is beautiful you'll understand and experience the amazing art of Dalí right away.
Fantastic experience: This is a place like no other. Make sure you book in advance. If you just turn up you can't get in. If you have any interest in Dali at all, this is a must see place. I won't try to describe it but you will never forget going. Enjoy
Fantastic experience: An amazing piece of art. Since Salvador Dalì wanted it, it can be considered, one of his creations. Dalí's artworks surround the visitors and, at the end of the tour, the feeling is of having been in touch with the artist. Even kids are impressed. Beautiful!
Fantastic experience: A very picturesque place as the way to Cadaques. This place will be interesting and for Dali fans and for those people who are not familiar with Dali. You will be able to see how the legendary painter lived.
Fantastic experience: Magic place next to the beach, where you'll understand the inspiration for some of Dali's work. Is a short tour, with great sights, lots of history and art
Fantastic experience: If you are visiting barcelona and think this place is to far to be worth a visit, think again. The views alone are worth the drive! And the house is amazingly wierd. Filled with stuffed animals and other things only someone such as salvador dali would put in his house. If you like dali's artworks you should definatly give this place a visit
Fantastic experience: Wow! Wow!Wow! What a trip. I took the ferry from Roses to Cadeques to experience the beautiful coast that inspired Dali to live here and preserve the town. Buy tickets in advance as only small groups of 4 or 5 can get access at a time - all expertly guided with plenty photo breaks and opportunities to ask questions.
Fantastic experience: Very interesting. I found the outside more enjoyable than the cramped interiors. We went off-season (December) and were the only ones on the tour. The drive alone into the town makes the trip worthwhile.
Fantastic experience: Interesting. Cool. Must see. Beautiful place. Love the labyrinthian house
Fantastic experience: A bit remote place but definitely worth the visit. The house is small and there isn't hardly any of his art pieces, but you can see how was his life there and love for eccentricity combined with practical solutions. The furniture, the atmosphere, the views and your imagination makes the visit brilliant!
Fantastic experience: If you are going to Barcelona/Figueres, it is more than worth the drive to the cute town of Cataquez.. Dalí's home is incredible. Be sure to buy tickets online prior. It is not likely you will get that day if you try to buy tickets there. Just like the museum, his home has something to see in every space available. You can also see the last painting he was working on. If you are a Dalí fan, you can't miss this.
Fantastic experience: Absolutely worth a visit! You will not only enjoy the unique setting, this setting will also make you understand Dalí's art a lot better. Reserve your tickets online, as it is almost impossible to get them on the spot. The rooms of the house are pretty small, so just a few visitors are allowed in every ten minutes (that's why you have to be there exactly at the time indicated on your ticket). Every small group is accompanied by a guide who will offer some explanations and answer questions. Don't miss out the excellent documentary shown in a pavillion on top of the garden!
Fantastic experience: Book in advance for a better experience and don’t forget to pick up your tickets in advance. Great guide, and the house is very unique if you enjoy art and architecture. Terrace is a must and to chill with the sea view.
Fantastic experience: Well worth the visit and the price. There’s no guided tour so do read up a bit before you visit. Visits are limited because the house in so small. In the low season you can get in early on the day and get a ticket, but when it’s busy you will need to book in advance. You can’t take your bags inside (there’s free cloaking) and you can take non-flash photos everywhere.
Fantastic experience: Loved this place, great view, crazy house. You should make a reservation before you go.
Fantastic experience: An absolute must for Dali fans, or even for those of you who are seeking a thrill of creative juices!
Fantastic experience: A sensational place, mandatory to see if you are a Salvador Dali fan. You have to book tickets in advance. I would highly recommend!
