Lending their musical instruments so the guys could play music in the stone chapel, making an extra paella for a family member who couldn't eat the catered paella due to allergies. Fantastic experience: Mas Sant Nicolau If you are looking only for a five-star hotel, this may not be for you. We were seeking an unusual venue for a far-flung extended family of nineteen people covering three generations, some of them with sophisticated, even affluent, lifestyles, to celebrate a landmark birthday and enjoy a reunion for one week. What we found was an idyllic spot in a historic location surrounded by birds, trees, fields and wild flora with rustic – but satisfactory – accommodation in a peaceful, silent enclosure the size of a small park. The tantalising eleventh century chapel (constructed almost entirely without wood) at the entrance set the tone, promising that this would be something different from any previous adventure. We performed an impromptu concert enjoying the ancient but dramatic acoustics. Our family occupied five of the seven contiguous cottages – dwellings, no doubt, of farm laborers over past centuries. These are not manicured, modernized town-dwellers' apartments, but an honest example of how and where people might have lived when our grandparents were born. (All the same, the accommodation has comfortable beds, fully equipped kitchens, shower rooms and WCs and everything was provided – from towels to matches for the barbecues). At the far end of the property stands a communal kitchen (with large fridge, cooker, dishwasher sink, utensils, glass and crockery) beside a brick-built barbecue and dining area, perfect for parties, private events or just family gatherings. This turned out to be the preference for our group, despite the availability of cooking and dining facilities in each cottage. Beyond the kitchen, a few evergreens provide shade and support for a couple of hammocks and around the field, there's plenty of shade. Between the cottages and the communal kitchen we found a playground and swing for the grandchildren alongside a swimming pool and poolside house we used as a lounge and common room. Our kids and grandchildren enjoyed drawing, painting, playing board games, and raiding the refrigerator – thoughtfully placed there for liquid refreshment of various kinds! There is abundant open space, plenty of shade with enough seating for all to enjoy – together or in groups apart. Tennis courts, ping-pong table, boulodrome, horses, some farm animals, all provide extra diversion for those with varying tastes, abilities or mobilities. Google Maps shows the venue in an instant. (TomTom, however, could not take me there.) But the best part of this whole adventure was the magical family who own and run Mas Sant Nicolau. Helen and Francis, and their son Gabriel, have that extraordinary gift of making everything come out just right. No request was too much for them. Unlike in my home, where small irritating chores still haven't been attended to after months (years?) of nagging, for Helen and Francis nothing was too much trouble and gained immediate attention. Our entire family fell in love with them – and with Mas Sant Nicolau. I know nineteen people who would love to go back there. Without hesitation I give Mas Sant Nicolau Five Stars.
