The Ice Well of Buscastell is located in Maçanet de la Selva, the only village in the plain of Selva of which there is evidence of the existence of ice wells. It is considered the largest covered ice well in the entire country.
Humans have been using ice and snow since very ancient times. Greek and Roman cultures highlighted their virtues for food preservation and for refreshing beverages, and medical applications were widely transmitted by Muslim doctors. In the mid-16th century, books by doctors were published in some cities of the Iberian Peninsula that advocated the virtues of snow use in numerous applications: as an anti-inflammatory, to stop bleeding, in cases of fevers, burns, headaches, stomach diseases, eye conditions, and even to combat the plague. The diffusion of these works spread their consumption in urban centers.
The trade of snow and ice in Catalonia was of significant importance and the 16th-17th centuries, and especially the 18th, were crucial for its development, becoming a great business; in 1765, there were fifteen wells only in the Montseny area. Their installation was often a concession from the local lord to families with economic, social, and political power and was under the supervision of a commissioner-inspector who controlled production and the payment of the corresponding taxes. This new industry became a very important economic complement to agricultural activity for many farmers and also influenced other trades, such as day laborers who participated in the filling and emptying of the wells and transporters. The abandonment of the wells from the mid-19th century was due to the advent of technology (electricity) that allowed for the industrial production of ice.
