Fantastic experience: Since I only had a short visit to Girona and was not in the mood for long lines or administrative hassle, I opted for the slightly more expensive rate with self-service. This way, there was no unnecessary wait when picking up or dealing with/discussions about insurance, just grabbed the key from the key dispenser. This was sorted in a few minutes. It cost a little more, but it was definitely worth it. Returning the car was simply putting the key in a mailbox. Really great. Also, the fuel deposit was released on my credit card the day after returning the vehicle. Really a fantastic experience! I have never been disappointed by Goldcar.

Positive experience: READ ON for a full account of Goldcar. My partner and I used them to drive over 500 miles in Spain from Girona to Valencia and back and encountered a simple flat tyre that turned out to be so simple. First of all, and the only reason Goldcar gets as many as three stars is when we collected the car. Despite a long queue and only two operators at the desk, once we got to the front we were served by an operator who was efficient and very thorough and spoke good English to help us understand. He also explained that booking direct would have saved us money as there were some hidden charges that the 3rd party did not disclose. To add to this, the car we received was a Fiat Panda and it had 25,000km on the clock so was fairly new and it was clean and tidy and really nice to drive. A good fit for our requirements. Everything was fine with the journey down to Valencia, the roads in Spain are good and easy to use with lovely views down the coast taking the AP-7. The big issue arose when we were heading back up the coast and made an overnight stop in Salou before heading to Girona to fly home the following day. When we arrived and parked up in Salou, I noticed a pancake flat front tyre. Now my first thoughts as would be anyone's was to grab the spare tyre, swap it out and think no more of it. This was quickly made impossible due to the absence of a spare tyre IN A RENTAL CAR nor any run flat foam or any assistance for the most simple mechanical issue. It was about 10pm, so outside of office hours but we called the road side assistance and the man explained the ONLY option was for a tow truck to meet us in 30mins and tow the car and we would have to get a taxi over 100 miles to the airport. I explained how ridiculous this was and how we paid for a car for 3 days so expected one for 3 days. He told us to call customer services. We called customer services the following morning and I am still angry to this day at this experience. I explained the situation the same as the night before to the lady at customer services who told me the same thing 'tow truck, taxi - ONLY option'. I explained that it was not an option. It was a flat tyre not a 6 car pile up and if they had provided a spare tyre which I believe should be standard in a rental car then we would not be having the conversation. I also asked if we would be reimbursed for any costs to come in the tow truck/taxi option and of course we would not. I asked to speak to a manager and was then rudely shouted over and cut off. The tone of this operator was disgusting and dismissive from the get go. Not good customer service. This got a little better after this call as the process you would expect to be offered was magically available to us. I called roadside assistance again and a very efficient lady mentioned that she could see we had called before and before I could explain the situation she said a mechanic would be dispatched in 30mins to FIX the tyre. Amazing! As with most mechanics, the wait was well over 30mins but 1.5hrs later a very helpful man arrived, found and plugged the hole within 15mins, pumped up the tyre and told us we would make it to Girona Airport over 100miles away on the fixed tyre with ease. He charged us 12Euros for the materials and told us the office would reimburse us for this. They wouldn't. But I was far past arguing over 12Euros. We did make it to the airport and the tyre held up perfectly. I explained the situation to the operator at the desk and he was calm and politely discussed the fact that we didn't have their super insurance etc etc which is fair but I felt that a spare tyre should be a requirement and he was understanding and empathetic but I doubt anything will come of that discussion. We are still waiting to see if our £1000 deposit is returned in full and I will be fighting the case if it is not. I will update this post with the outcome. To conclude, Goldcar is a good choice as long as nothing goes wrong. Good cars, bad service, and terrible customer support should anything go wrong.

Since I have comprehensive insurance with my credit card, I chose the option for my card to be charged €1269. Even two days after the problem-free return of the vehicle, the reservation had still not been deleted. This can quickly lead to reaching the credit card limit. Fantastic experience: Couldn't fault my recent 8 day rental from Gold Car. There was a fair queue to pick up but it's to be expected as they were significantly cheaper than others. But saying that it was only 15 mins or so and we were late out of baggage collection so essentially last in the queue. Had the normal upsell about insurance but again to be expected, either buy the insurance or take out alternative but be prepared with a credit card to cover the deposit. Car was very new and very clean, drove well. Just be aware that most car parks/on street parking is very tight. We had a 2008 and that felt big in some of the car parks, be prepared for 20 point turns and parking sensors going wild when you've got objects on all corners. In the future I'll probably go for something smaller. Return was quick and easy, and deposit was unblocked on card in 24 hours.

Positive experience: We used Gold Car from Girona airport last week, I was a bit nervous as I read some bad reviews on here prior to our visit but we experienced an easy transaction with good customer service. We unfortunately had a puncture (do to the roads not the car) on the first day of hire but they sent an engineer out to look at the car that evening and it was taken away the next morning as unfortunately there was no spare. My husband got a taxi back to the airport to get a new car (which he was reimbursed for), this was all very straightforward and easy. It would’ve of been easier if the car did have a spare but that being said it did not effect our trip much at all. We will use Gold Car again and happily to recommend them.
