About Festival Terra de Trobadors

The Terra de Trobadors Festival of Castelló d'Empúries stands out as one of the first historical cultural events in Catalonia and represents the most prominent festive and cultural event in Castelló d'Empúries, held during the second weekend of September each year.

It constitutes a multifaceted space for fun and culture in which the inhabitants of Castelló d'Empúries relive their past and the glorious county era of the Middle Ages with enthusiasm and a festive attitude. At that time, the capital of Empúries county flourished as a land of troubadours, with the counts of Empúries as protectors and sponsors of troubadours and minstrels, even getting involved in lyrical composition, as evidenced by the works of Count Ponç Hug IV (1277- 1313) and of the Child Pedro I (1325-1342).

The origin of the Terra de Trobadors festival dates back to the cultural ties with Northern Catalonia and the Occitan lands. In 1991, it arose from a proposal by the group of troubadour musicians known as CREMM-TROBAR (Centre de Recherche et de Expression des Musiques Médiévales-Trobar) of Carcassonne, with the collaboration of the Région Languedoc-Roussillon, the General Directorate of Cultural Promotion of the Department of Culture of the Generalitat of Catalonia and the Gerona Provincial Council.

The media impact and magnitude of the festival have elevated it to an event of national and international importance. It has transcended borders by participating in other national and European festivals through international co-productions. It has also been part of medieval conferences organized by Catalan universities and has been featured in the main magazines specialized in medieval dissemination.
